Checking Procedure for Biological Nutrient Removal Processes with evaluation of possible Energy/Cost Saving in Intermittent Aeration Process

WWTPcheckALT for Upgrading of existing single Activated Sludge Reactor and decrease of biological sludge amount.

The intermittent aerated process allows to obtain nitrification and denitrification in the same tank during the alternating periods of aeration and non-aeration. The flow of influent wastewater through the reactor is basically continuous. Cyclic on-and-off air supply in the reactor allows the creation of intermittent aeration and the formation of aerobic and anoxic conditions adequate for implementing sequential nitrification and denitrification phases. In this way, the intermittent aerated process allows to obtain carbon and nitrogen removal efficiency similar to the conventional pre-denitrification scheme, but guarantee also an improvement of settleability and a reduction of energy costs related to the absence of the mixed liquor return flow.
